The Boston Latin School Junior Classical League is an organization dedicated to the promotion of ancient culture, including Greek and Roman, in the modern world. We are a chapter of the much larger ACL (American Classical League). The student branches of this organization includes the NJCL (National Junior Classical League) and the MassJCL (Massachusetts Junior Classical League), of which BLSJCL is an affiliate.​

The BLSJCL chapter is one of the largest in the NJCL, as well as the largest at the MassJCL. Throughout the year, the BLSJCL attends many state level events, such as kickoff and state convention (to learn more, visit the Events tab). We also attend the main national event - The NJCL Convention, which will be held at the University of Indiana at Bloomington in 2026.

As part of JCL, many of us join the NJCL Latin Honor Society. The NJCL Latin Honor Society is a special designation given to Junior Classical League students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and citizenship in Latin class. NJCL Latin Honor Society induction matters because it shows prospective colleges and employers that a student values high academic achievement and has maintained proper citizenship. Colleges especially value language honor society induction because they are eager to accept students who challenge themselves in meaningful courses and who succeed. The Latin Honor Society membership is earned annually based on student performance.​

 

JCL offers a plethora of fun events as well! There are plenty of competitive events such as Academics, Graphic Arts, Creative Arts, Olympika, and Certamen, and there are other fun events, such as Ludi and the BLSJCL's Lemuria, Saturnalia, and Frigidalia!

 

Certamen is a competitive, buzzer-style game where participants answer questions for classically themed questions. The four major categories are the Latin language, Greco-Roman Mythology, Roman History, and Roman Culture.
