BLSJCL Certamen Dei Sub Numine Viget

Updated: Mar 8, 2020
This past Saturday on February 29th, the BLSJCL Certamen teams traveled to Princeton University to compete in the 3rd Annual Princeton Certamen tournament. There were a lot of expectations this year considering that we had won Novice and Advanced last year and Advanced in the inaugural tournament. However, BLS did not let the expectations affect their play, and instead played extremely well with all 3 BLS A teams from all 3 levels making finals.
Our Novice team met the reigning Yale Certamen champions from Brookfield Academy (WI) and a strong team from Midtown Classical (FL). After 19 tossups, the score was tied at 100 between BLS and Brookfield Academy. Once there were no challenges to be made, the final question which was a passage question was read. The question began with "cuius-" but before the moderator could continue, Creighton Banitt (BLS '24) buzzed in and answered "septimi" which was correct. Despite a disappointing loss in the Semi-Finals at Yale Certamen, BLS bounces back to win their first-ever championship.

The Intermediate finals saw a rematch from last year's Novice finals between BLS and both Harriton High School (PA) teams. Despite a late 4th quarter run, BLS was not able to overcome Harriton B. However, they were still able to clinch a 2nd place.

After a long day of competing, Advanced finals was underway with a match between BLS A, who were looking to win their 3rd Advanced Princeton championship in a row, Tom C. Clark High School (TX), and Basis DC. Dante (BLS '20) led the way in scoring as usual and finished with 9 tossups. His teammates Danny (BLS '21) and Ethan (BLS '21) each added 2, and Luc (BLS '21) added 1. BLS finished the round with 250 points, having scored on 14 of the 20 tossups to 3-peat.

Congrats to all of our teams for representing BLS so well, and to Creighton and Dante for winning MVP for their respective levels.
Thank you to the Princeton Certamen team and to the coaches for everything they've done!
